TRADE; Mercosur, Vietnam, United States, WTO on agenda of meeting between MEPs and Commissioner Malmström

„The European Parliament’s new Committee on International Trade (INTA) (see EUROPE B12296A7) hosted a hearing with the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, for its first meeting on Tuesday 23 July. The number of questions and the broad spectrum of topics covered revealed that trade policy issues would remain more burning and complex than ever in this legislature. The issues discussed mainly concerned the trade agreements with Mercosur (see EUROPE B12286A3, B12297A9) and Vietnam (see EUROPE B12286A5), which will be subject to the consent of MEPs.

For left-wing MEPs, however, including Helmut Scholz (GUE/NGL, Germany), this is still not enough, as the agreement is not up to the challenges of the 21st century…“
